Currently, retention policies can be set at preset time intervals and it would be great to have more flexibility.

Customize the date duration. Have one dropdown field with: days, weeks, months, years and a second field with a customizable digit input. For example you could set 3 weeks as a retention policy.
Retention based on the number of backups stored. For example, keep the last 30 backups. This would be set instead of the time based retention.
