Is there an existing issue for this feature request?

  • I have searched the existing issues

I need to print a compliant hook in an awkward space, and I need supports on the lip of the hook, but the actual compliant mechanism is embedded with walls around all three sides. I used support painting to paint the base around the hook red and prevent supports from being generated down there, didn't work.

I painted the hook red, and traced a very thin green line along the edge to encourage the supports to focus on generating around that to bypass the issue, didn't work.

There's no way I can remove these supports without breaking the whole thing off.
I need a way to exclude specific top faces from being uses as support bases, and I can't seem to find a way.

Which printers will be beneficial to this feature?

All

Describe the solution you'd like

Preferably, a solution would be embedded within the painting utility; I paint the top face red, it refuses to start any supports off of that area.

Describe alternatives you've considered

I tried my best to chamfer and fillet out the flat to trick the support generation, but I was unsuccessful.
In the end, I had to design supports directly in the CAD and exclude the entire lip of the hook in the slicer.

Additional context

If you're curious, I'm designing and printing an aftermarket car speaker bracket. The stock speaker is held in with a very hefty metal clip, and I'm trying to design this clip to be just as stiff. Not so much it breaks trying to get it in, just enough that it's not coming back out easily any time soon. The aftermarket speaker will take up the space for a normal, vertical hook, so I had to make the hook come out at an angle from the inside of the bracket. Would have been nice if I didn't need to worry about those supports.
